Letters to the editor
Would you allow me to comment on New York's Diva article?
Dear editor: With excitement and a great interest, I read your article New York's Divas. It was fabulous. And so informative, to see all these stars responding to your interview in a very different manner. Lafayette is clever. He did not tell them he was asking each one of them the same questions! He knew what he was doing, the rascal. But hey, it worked like a charm. First, the selection of the diva was very good. Different age range, personalities and styles. Second, I learned a great deal about how New York's stars describe talent and music immediate surroundings. I found the answers of Carol Sloane and Marlene Verplanck fascinating. I was impressed by their modesty, although they are as said by Lafayette, real legends. Hilary Kole was great too. right on. I like very much what she said, she is real. Laurie Kraus was very impressive. That's all. Congrats on a great piece of journalism. Rob Hamilton, Kent, UK. Good stuff: Divas, big breasts and Rabbis!
Hi, you have quite an unusual magazine. In the same issue, you write about divas, American men obsession with large breasts and a rabbi. And all articles are well written and funny. I love your magazine. Too bad, I can't get in Addis Ababa. How can I get an autographed photo of Hilary Kole? Medhet Suleiman, Adis Ababa, Ethiopia. Hello to Shoshanna Rosenstein Hello Shoshanna. I like what you write. Your article on that Rap singer turkey was great. I hate rappers. As you said, Chadlove is a bad Jewish boy. He stinks. Yep, keep kicking their asses. Joel Tovia, Tel Aviv, Israel. Rabbi Moshe Wiener. What a man! Rabbi Wiener! What a man. In this day and age, it is a pleasure to meet someone you could actually respect, isn't it? I was delighted to read the wonderful article about Rabbi Wiener. I do not know him personally, but I am familiar with his important work and his well-respected organizations. No one does more for people in need, and no one is as humble about his own worth, as this great rabbi. Among the many rabbis who, these days, chiefly involve themselves with political issues, doing business, and mingling with powerful individuals, Rabbi Wiener stands as a shining example of what a rabbi ought to be. And this article depicts him most eloquently and truthfully as a man of great learning, strength, and influence, who nevertheless knows that his first duty is to the common people. With the media full of stories about individuals whose motives and actions are not always "kosher," it is a rare pleasure to read about a person you can respect and honor. An Insider, New York, USA.

MADONNA, KABBALAH AND GWENYTH PALTRO
I read this in your April issue...Have you noticed something funny? Life and history are so cyclical. Ms. Gwenyth Paltro is having her London house exorcised by Kabbalah followers, according to the advice Madonna gave her. There will be a shofar call, and psalms will be read -- great fun. Of course, this is neither a Jewish nor a Christian exorcism, but something interesting in between. Does this not remind you the time in Hellenistic Egypt, before Christianity took over? Thousands of pagans became Jews, or semi-Jews, rather, since they did not feel like having circumcisions as adults. Being tired of the repetitive pagan religions, they had a strong pull toward the monotheistic Jewish religion, and adapted it to their needs. If Christianity had not succeeded in grabbing these people by making it so my easier than Judaism, the world today would have been largely Jewish. So I am beginning to like Madonna and the rest of her lunatic Kabalistic friends. Is the cycle being closed? Are we going to have many converts to Judaism, and if so, would they be taken seriously by the Jewish authorities? I sincerely hope they will be embraced. I would love to see a million Jewish converts taking over the world's governments! Rosa A, New York, USA I am touched by Rabbi Moshe's good work!
Dear Max: Thank you for sending this very good article. I am impressed and touched by Rabbi Moshe's good work, especially for the frail elderly...I meant to include my respect for Rabbi's work with the poor, the unemployed, and immigrants. This is important work. And I liked the quote from Cicero. All the best! Barbara Singer, New York, USA. Rabbi Wiener: "I am very humbled." This was very kind of you and profoundly appreciated and certainly not necessary and without a doubt there are many individuals who deserve it more but if it will help facilitate support for our efforts to help our client population it will be a source of merit and blessing to you and all associated with you. I am very humbled. Rabbi Moshe Wiener, Executive Director, Jewish Community Council of Greater Coney Island, Inc. You are welcome Patti! Dear Mr. de Lafayette: Thank you so much for the wonderful article! It was very kind of you to include me the your Diva Series. I enjoyed very much reading also about Carol Sloane - an incredible singer, and true vocal treasure. I had the honor of accompanying her two years ago at the Village Vanguard. She is also a very gracious lady, too and lots of fun. I also was delighted to see the article on Hillary Kole. I recently heard her with Eric Comstock and Christopher Gines performing the "Singing Astaire" show at The Royal Room, here in Palm Beach. What a great show and Hillary knocked me out. A great evening of music and entertainment and it was so apparent that everyone on stage was having a great time! I will definitely stay in touch and let you know the next time I will be playing in New York. I would be very pleased to have you be my guest at my next performance in NYC. Are you familiar with a wonderful singer, Rebecca Parris? She is a great musician and very funny and intelligent. Best, Patti Verplanck, Florida, USA. continues on page 2
