Max -- I finally got around to reading Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz's article about Purim. It is magnificent. In one short page, this incredible scholar has managed to convey a world view which has numerous, and to me, stunning, insights. I rarely like any of the modern interpreters of the Kabbalah; too many of them are dangerously close to the New Age movement, which, as you know, I heartily despise. But  Rabbi Steinsaltz's complex explanation of the working of the universe does not leave a place for doubt or argument. You read it and believe that he has some special knowledge -- and for an agnostic like me who has by now despaired of understanding anything in this cruel world -- it gives a sense of peace and comfort. I am going to get his Tania book now. Have you read it yet? When you speak to him next, tell him how much I loved the article. I wish I knew him well enough to do it myself.

It was 1987!   At a lecture they were playing an old news video of  Lt. Col. Oliver North testifying at the Iran-Contra hearings during the Reagan  Administration.
There was Ollie in front of  God and country getting  the third degree, but what he said was stunning! He was being drilled  by a senator; "Did you not recently spend close to $60,000 for a home security  system?" Ollie replied, "Yes, I did, Sir." The senator  continued, trying to get a laugh out of the audience, "Isn't that just a  little excessive?". "No, sir," continued Ollie. "No? And why  not?" the senator asked. "Because the lives of my family and I were  threatened, sir." . "Threatened? By whom?" the senator questioned.  "By a terrorist, sir" Ollie answered. "Terrorist? What  terrorist could possibly scare you that much?". "His name is Osama bin  Laden, sir" Ollie replied. At this point the senator tried to repeat  the name, but couldn't pronounce it, which most people back then probably  couldn't. A couple of people laughed at the attempt. Then the senator continued. Why are you so afraid of this man?" the senator asked.  "Because, sir, he is the most evil person alive that I know of", Ollie  answered. "And what do you recommend we do about him?" asked the senator.  "Well, sir, if it was up to  me, I would recommend that an assassin  team be formed to eliminate him and his men from the face of the earth."  The senator disagreed with this approach, and that was all that was  shown of the clip.  By the way, that senator was  Al Gore!  Also: Terrorist pilot Mohammad Atta  blew up a bus in Israel in  1986. The Israelis captured, tried and imprisoned him. As part of the Oslo  agreement with the Palestinians in 1993, Israel had to agree to release  so-called "political prisoners." However, the Israelis would not release any with blood on their hands, The American  President at the time,  Bill Clinton, and his Secretary of State, Warren Christopher, "insisted" that  all prisoners be released.   Thus Mohammad Atta was  freed and eventually thanked the US by flying an airplane into Tower One of  the World Trade Center. This was reported by many of the American TV networks  at the time that the terrorists were first identified. It was censored in the US  from all later reports. KIDNAPPED BY MY MUSLIM STUDENTS IN BEIRUT, AND ALSO SAVED BY MUSLIM GUERILLAS...

Dear friends at New York Jewish Herald. This is a true story. The nightmares and fear I lived... been kidnapped by Muslim students I taught in Beirut in 1975, and also being saved by a Muslim guerilla. I am telling you this to express to you that "in very house, there is a toilet" as Arabs say. I am a Jew who was born in Kiev. My parents immigrated to Lebanon in 1949. I earned a license in French literature from University Saint Joseph in Beirut. My French is excellent. My English is so so. In 1975, I was hired as teacher of French in a Muslim high school in Beirut. Around the mid of that year, the civil war exploded in Lebanon. The Palestinians who had many military camps in Lebanon waged an atrocious war against the Christian and Jewish Lebanese. In October 1975, I was driving my car in Ras Beirut, a trendy quarter in Beirut. Five militia men ordered me to stop the car and forced me to get out of my car. As soon as they looked at me, one of them shouted "YAHOUDI", meaning a Jew. Another armed man shouted "Shoot him". I was terrified. But all of a sudden, I recognized one of them as one of the students I taught at the Muslim school. For a moment, I felt safe and thanked God. Little did I know, this very student of mine did not come to my rescue. On the contrary, he grabbed me by the neck and said "We meet again, Heh? Jewish? I knew it the moment I saw you at the school." He threw me in a jeep and told the others to take me to the camp. I did not know what to say or how to react fearing for my life. I was detained 2 days at the camp without water, food or a blanket. Because I was fluent in Arabic, I understood what the kidnappers were talking about and what they have decided to do with me. In order words, I heard and knew that they were planning on shooting me in a few minutes and dumping my body under the Mazraa bridge, where the camp was located. Just two or three minutes before my execution, a tall man wearing a mask approached me and whispered in my ear: "Oustaz (Meaning teacher in Arabic) you are lucky, I saw you. You were nice to me, you gave me good grade at the school of Oustaz Abel Karim (Owner of the school where I taught that year). I am not like Abdel Rahman (Referring to the other student of mine who threw me in the jeep), I have honor and I am grateful to you. Do not worry, I will set you free, and here, take this, a gun, you might need it...I will take you out with one of the guys I know very well and I will let you go....do not take the boulevard, run in the other direction toward the Unesco (Building of the Unesco in Beirut). I am sorry for your car, nothing I can do to give it back to you...and Outaz (Professor or teacher) do not drive anymore in this area." He hugged me with affection, kissed me on the cheek and asked me to pardon his friends. THIS MAN SAVED MY LIFE! And he was a Muslim guerilla, and I am a Jew. Did you get my message?

Dear Secretary Spellings:

We are seeking your help in rectifying what we believe were inappropriate actions taken by Harvard University and Georgetown University. As you know, both schools receive hundreds of thousands of dollars from the Department of Education pursuant to Title VI of the Higher Education Act. They also receive the prestigious designation as national resource centers for Middle East studies, which attracts additional outside funding. These significant and financially lucrative benefits come with important responsibilities: National resource centers like Harvard and Georgetown have an obligation to promote serious scholarship and diverse points of view so that the purposes of Title VI can be achieved.  Title VI was enacted so that the public could be educated on international matters, and so that experts could be properly trained to serve our country’s security and other national interests. The goals of Title VI require a fair and academically unbiased approach to the study of Islam and the Middle East that will meet American objectives. Title VI’s purposes are in no way served if national resource centers are associated with those who promote and support hatred of the United States, the murder of Americans, Israelis and Jews, the funding of the families of suicide bombers, and factual distortions about the U.S., Israel and Jews. Yet Harvard and Georgetown have associated themselves with an individual with precisely this agenda when they each recently accepted a gift of 20 million dollars from Saudi Arabian prince Alwaleed bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Alsaud, purportedly to advance the study of Islam. In our view, Harvard and Georgetown should not have accepted bin Talal’s money, and we urge you to advise these schools to return it, or risk losing their Title VI funding. You may recall that bin Talal garnered some publicity a few years ago, when he tried to donate 10 million dollars to the Twin Towers Fund for victims of 9/11. In a news release at the time, bin Talal was quoted as saying, “Our Palestinian brethren continue to be slaughtered at the hands of Israelis while the world turns the other cheek.” Because he suggested that 9/11 was caused by our country’s relationship with the State of Israel, then-New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani appropriately rejected bin Talal’s gift. Harvard and Georgetown should have done the same thing, because bin Talal has supported groups and programs that promote hatred and violence against the United States, Israel and Jews. He has supported the families of suicide bombers. He has helped to fund the terror group Hamas. He has promoted violence against women. He has pleaded with Muslim parents to teach their children to become “martyrs” -- a code word for suicide bombers who murder innocent men, women and children.  News reports revealed that bin Talal pledged a gift of 27 million dollars during a telethon held in April 2002, for the benefit of the Saudi Committee for the Support of the al-Qedas Intifada, which reportedly helps fund and support Palestinian Arab terrorism against Israelis and Jews. According to an analysis conducted by the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America (CAMERA), the head of this committee, Prince Naif bin Abdul Azia, said in a statement: “The committee will continue to provide direct assistance to the families of Palestinian martyrs [i.e., suicide bombers] and those wounded while resisting the occupation (The Times of London 4/23/02).” Bin Talal is also co-owner of the ART TV network, which includes Iqra TV, whose programming is anti-American and anti-Semitic.  Bin Talal has also been linked with a group that produces teaching materials for American public school students that are anti-American, anti-Israel and anti-Jewish. As you know, teaching materials on the Middle East are prepared and disseminated in American classrooms with the help of the Title VI program. One example is a manual called the “Arab World Studies Notebook,” which has been used in secondary schools.

According to an investigation by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA), this manual “denigrates” the Jewish people’s “historical connection to Jerusalem,” it “suggests that Jews have undue influence on U.S. foreign policy,” it “suggests that the Koran ‘synthesizes and perfects earlier revelations,’ meaning those ascribed to by Christians and Jews,” and it “leaves out any facts and figures about the State of Israel in its country-by-country section,” referring instead only to “Palestine.” The JTA reported that bin Talal initiated a meeting with a representative of one of the groups involved in publishing this distorted, propagandist manual after hearing about their teaching program. You may be aware that recently, several members of Congress strongly voiced their disapproval of bin Talal and his conduct. On November 18, 2005, 22 U.S. Representatives sent a letter to the new Saudi ambassador to the U.S., criticizing bin Talal, his part-ownership of the ART TV network, and “the ongoing incitement against Americans and Jews that is present in the programming content of Iqra television.”  The congressional leaders noted that although Iqra TV bills itself as a channel dedicated to bringing ‘the teaching of Islam into the homes and hearts of Arabs worldwide,’ it actually broadcasts numerous shows and programs that incite and encourage hatred against Americans, Jews, and Westerners in general.” These congressional leaders recognized that Bin Talal’s sponsorship of programming that is allegedly geared to teaching the Arab world about Islam is, in reality, an effort to encourage intolerance and promote hatred and violence toward the United States, Israel and Jews.

There can be no doubt that bin Talal is using his money at Harvard and Georgetown for the same appalling purpose: to ensure that his hateful views, which distort the truth about the U.S., Israel and Jews, are disseminated to the American public. In 2002, bin Talal reportedly told the Arab Times that an Arab boycott of American products was not the way to influence U.S. decision-making. He recognized that his influence in this country could be more effectively accomplished in a different way.  According to bin Talal, “ you have to be active . . . inside U.S. society. ” He affirmed this objective when he was recently asked about his gifts to Harvard and Georgetown in a New York Times interview reported on January 1, 2006. Bin Talal readily admitted that he is concerned about Islamic studies that “fit my overall global vision.” Schools like Harvard and Georgetown, which reap financial and other benefits from our government as Title VI national resource centers, should not appear to be associated in any way in promoting bin Talal’s hateful “vision.”  You may know that when the president of the United Arab Emirates made a 2.5 million dollar gift to Harvard in 2000. Harvard eventually returned the gift after it was revealed that the donor had ties to a center that promulgated anti-American and anti-Semitic views. Bin Talal’s connections are no less disturbing, and it is thus incomprehensible that Harvard so readily accepted his gift. We urge you to advise Harvard and Georgetown to return bin Talal’s money or risk losing their Title VI funding. We should now be especially sensitive to the type of funding our taxpayer-supported universities accept, when our country and the western world are in the midst of an international war against radical Islamic terrorism. We and other members of the public must be able to trust that recipients of taxpayers’ money through grants under Title VI will have unquestionable records in support of serious and honest scholarship, and the promotion of tolerance and diversity. Universities that receive federal funding for the purpose of serving American interests must have absolutely no connection to those who incite hatred of our country and our allies, promote murder, encourage children to become suicide bombers — and support the families of the ones who do — and promote bias and academic dishonesty.

Statement from the Simon Wiesenthal Center on its Jerusalem Project

You may have read some recent articles in the press regarding the discovery of human remains at the construction site of the Simon Wiesenthal Center's Center for Human Dignity-Museum of Tolerance Jerusalem. Unfortunately many of these articles are inaccurate and we would like to set the record straight. A group of Islamic organizations petitioned the Supreme Court of Israel to permanently halt the construction of this project on the grounds that it is a Moslem cemetery.  Here are the critical points: 1-The Center for Human Dignity is being built in the heart of West Jerusalem, on land granted to the Simon Wiesenthal Center by the Government of Israel and the City of Jerusalem.  At no time did the Government of Israel or the City of Jerusalem designate the site as a Moslem cemetery. Rather, it had a legal status as a 'public open space.'  The site ceased to be regarded as a cemetery for many years, both de facto and de jure .  No burials have taken place in the Mamilla cemetery since the beginning of the 20th century. 2-More importantly, the religious leaders of the Moslem community, have, for many years, regarded this area, including the Center for Human Dignity site, as land which could be developed for public purposes after moving and reburying graves and human remains. 3-In 1927, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Haj Amin el Husseini, (a pro-Nazi supporter of Hitler) issued a religious ruling that forbade continued burials in this area in order to change its use to a commercial designation so that the land could be used as an economic impetus for Arab growth. 4-In 1929, the Grand Mufti, initiated the building of the Palace Hotel on the southern part of the Mamilla cemetery and re-interred human remains found during construction, as already then the cemetery was considered 'Mundras' (abandoned), which according to Moslem law would permit it to be used for  public purposes. 5-Moreover, at that time, the High Moslem Council set an area of the cemetery for public buildings and an Arab university which was never built due to lack of funds. 6-On June 7, 1964, the issue was brought before the Sha'aria (Moslem Religious Law) Court.  The president of this Moslem Court of Appeals in Jaffa ruled the cemetery "a Mundras.that its sanctity has ceased to exist in  it.and it is permitted to do whatever is permitted to do in any other land which was never a cemetery..". To this day, this religious law approach that permits graves to be moved for public and/or commercial use purposes remains in effect in Moslem countries like Egypt and Lebanon.
8-For the last thirty years, the site consisted of two parking lots, an underground (four-level) parking lot, and an open, paved lot bordering the old Mamilla cemetery. Hundreds of cars parked in these lots every day. There were never any objections. 9-The Simon Wiesenthal Center initiated a town plan to build a museum on the parcel allocated to it by the Government of Israel and the Municipality of Jerusalem and the City of Jerusalem issued a building permit to construct a museum.  For five years during the public planning process, the Center for Human Dignity was the subject of hearings at open City Council meetings, through notices published in both Hebrew and Arabic newspapers, and the architectural model was on public display at City Hall.  At no time  throughout that entire public process, did a single person or organization come forward to object to the use of the grounds on the premise that the site was a Moslem cemetery. 10-All of Jerusalem is layered in memory and history and it is not unusual for construction work in Jerusalem, a 3,000-year-old city, to encounter archeological artifacts and remains.  That is why there is a special department called the Israel Antiquities Authority, charged with the special handling of any archeological artifacts or remains that are found.  Since the commencement of excavation, the project has been under their supervision, and every instruction has been followed. The Simon Wiesenthal Center made its case to the Israeli Supreme Court on February 15, 2006 and awaits its decision.  Further, the Center is fully committed to finding an acceptable solution according to the highest norms of Judaism and Islam.  The Center has offered three possible remedies to the Court, which it would underwrite, including re-interrment of the ancient bones to a Moslem cemetery, erecting a dignified monument to those whose remains were removed, and cleaning up and restoring the adjacent Moslem cemetery, (at SWC expense), which sadly, has been unkempt and neglected for decades. Unfortunately, some parties wish to pre-empt the Israeli Supreme Court and do not have the courtesy to allow justice to take its course.  In so doing, they only embolden those extreme elements whose sole objective is to reclaim the heart of Jerusalem and to permanently stop the construction of the Center for Human Dignity-Museum of Tolerance Jerusalem.  They will not succeed!

ISLAMOPHOBIA: Muslim Countries Lead In  "Unfavorable Attitudes" Towards Others


The Muslim countries averaged 52.2%  "Unfavorable Attitudes" towards Christians, while the U.S. and European countries averaged 32.6% "Unfavorable Attitudes" towards Muslims. So, the Muslim countries "Unfavorable Attitudes" towards Christians were 1.6 times as high as the "Unfavorable Attitudes" of the U.S. and European countries towards Muslims. For Jews, the Muslim countries averaged "Unfavorable Attitudes" of 79.6%, while the U.S. and European countries averaged 12.2%. So, Muslim countries "Unfavorable Attitudes" towards Jews averaged 6.35 times as high as the U.S. and European countries.  It should be noted that the  survey question referred to Jews, not to Israel. Western country responses for "Unfavorable Attitudes" towards Muslims were:  U.S. 22%; Britain 14%, France 34%; Germany 47%, Netherlands 51%.   It is striking that the U.S. and  Britain which are under the most severe criticism because of Iraq, are on the low-end of "Unfavorable  Attitudes" towards Muslims. Muslim country responses for "Unfavorable Attitudes" towards Christians  were: Turkey 63%; Pakistan 58%; Jordan 41%; Morocco 61%; Indonesia 38%. Muslim Country responses for "Unfavorable Attitudes" towards Jews were:  Turkey 60%; Pakistan 74%; Jordan 100%; Morocco 88%; Indonesia 76%. For individual Western  country responses the "Unfavorable Attitudes" on  Jews were: U.S. 7%; Britain 6%; France 16%; Germany 21%; Netherlands 11%. In the same survey, Europeans were questioned on foreign workers and residents from the Middle East, North Africa and Eastern European countries.  For the Middle East and  North Africa,41.4% said it was a "Bad Thing"  and 40.8% said it was a "Bad Thing" for persons from  Eastern European countries. The country breakdown was: Foreign Workers and Residents a "Bad Thing"

THE TRUTH AND DECENCY ARE NOT DICTATED BY A PARTICULAR RELIGION

Dear Editor of the New York Jewish Herald: Mao Tsung once said, religion is poison. He said that at a time when rebellious Chinese religious tried to undermine his regime. Religion was confronting politic in China, and particularly Chinese communism. He found in all religions, a threat to his regime. Roman empire felt the same way. The Romans annihilated Jews and Christians. The infamous Roman Catholic Inquisition baptized under the name of Ignace de Loyola burned more than 25,000 Christian protestants in Europe. Christians killed Christians by the thousands. In Iraq, Muslim Sunni leaders under Saddam Hussein gazed hundreds of thousands of Muslim Shiites, including Turkmen and Saduceans and outcasted the Esseens. Jews battled Jews throughout ancient history and divided their promised land into two separate and unfriendly kingdoms, Israel and Judea, one of the major reasons for the destruction of the Hebrews and their many exiles. When religion becomes a tool for destruction, greed, personal gain, hunger for denomination and power and military apparatus to feed racism and fanaticism, religion becomes poison. Jews and Arabs are direct cousins by blood. This is proven by history and the Bible. They eat the same food, dress alike, look identical, all Jewish men and Arab men are circumcised, their women dance like twins and kept in the shadow and their music originated from the same hills, mountains and folklore. Jews mock the Prophet Mohammad while the Koran recognizes all the Jewish prophets and reveres them. Also the Koran recognizes Jesus as "from the breath of God". But Judaism does not recognize either Jesus or Mohammad. Yet, Christians and Jews are allies. Strange. It is strange, because Christians and Muslims should be allies, considering that Islam is the only religion that honored and recognized Jesus as a prophet and a messenger of God. And his mother Mary or Myriam occupied a great place of honor in Islam. A whole chapter called "Sourat Myriam" was devoted to Mary. The truth and decency are not dictated by a particular religion. Unfortunately fanatic Jews, Christians and Arabs are fueling hatred not their religion. I just love your in-depth essays and editorials. One request, if I may. Should I say a suggestion? I do sense that some of your columnists are extremists. You appeal to a large audience in America and around the world, including Muslim countries. And Muslims read your articles and news quite frequently. Do not alienate them. Add them to your circle of friends. Be gentle but remain responsible. Forget about the politicians. They are selfish. Use your powerful tool, your access to millions of readers, to educate the world. Arlene Peck or no Arlene Peck, Pipes or no Pipes, Judaism or Islam should not affect your compassion and disillusion the conceptions of your readers. By the way, congrats on the impressive rating given to you by Google. You earned it. God be with you, all the way.

HORNY RABBIS. MORGENSTEIN IS RIGHT!

Dear editor: I read your interview of Gary Morgenstein. I must admit it was fun. If you read between the lines, you will understand how screwed up are the Jews. Morgenstein, a Jew himself admitted that Jews are obsessed by sex and dirty bathrooms. This says it all. At least Morgenstein is honest. You know what, I am going to buy his book. I changed my mind. I want to see how screwed up are those women rabbis. It is unconceivable for civilized people and Arabs, religious women having sex like rabbi women. Morgenstein is right on. I live in Florida. And I saw on television, trials of 2 rabbis who were jailed for life for stuff like the ones Morgenstein wrote about. Morgenstein is right. Let me tell you Muslim women have more moral values than Jewish women. No Muslim women will strip in public and in cinema like Jewish actresses do. We don't date because we want sex. We go out with respectable men to see if we can create a good family and bring up polite children. Tell Morgenstein I said that. Ask him if he has ever dated an Arab woman. I am sure he did not. As a Muslim Arab American, I was absolutely horrified by the writings of Arlene Peck. She is ignorant, hateful, and disrespectful. Her generalizations were not only hurtful, but outright racist. As a race that had to endure the Holocaust, I can't imagine why Jews would tolerate that type of hate to flood their websites. The worst part is, you have the nerve to put "news" in the name of your website!!!! This was the first "news" website I have visited that decided that has compared the treatment of Arab women by Arab men to the treatment of farm animals. How dare you try to point out disrespect in other cultures, when your very own website is disrepectful and one-sided. The next time you write about Arab treatment of women, please mention the following passage on Hasidic Women: "Modesty of the Hasidic girl is protected from the age of three by long stockings, long sleeves, and high-necked blouses. In the Hasidic hierarchy of values, women are accorded less importance than men. As a result, education is considerably different for hasidic girls than for boys. As the hasidim do not regard the intellect of girls to be equal to that of the boys, it is considered sufficient if they learn about the Bible, the religious holidays, and the dietary laws".  Your "news" website seems more like a KKK website to me.

COMMENT ON ELENA RUBIN'S LETTER

Dear Ms.  Rubin:
I have read your  letter with great concern, since I am an American Jewish woman with   orthodox upbringing, and a great believer in peace and cooperation between  Muslims and Jews, despite all the hate and trouble we now experience in our  world. I am not writing to  defend Arlene Peck and her views; however, free speech is her right, and any  website that is self respecting would allow all points of view. In  this particular website, the editor in chief has a regular column dedicated to  the Arab point of view, right next to the Israeli point of view, and I  am sure some people object to that too. But we must allow everyone to bring  their thoughts to the open, or how else can we communicate or  educate? And speaking of  education, of course Muslim women in this day and age receive proper education.  The misconception about the treatment of Arab women stems from the same reason  you have a misconception regarding the education of Hasidic women. There are always small fanatic groups, in  both our cultures, that tend to keep women down. That does not mean, of course,  that the entire group is guilty! I personally know many extremely well  educated Muslim women, including scientists, teachers, writers, artists – what  have you. And in the Jewish orthodox and Hasidic group, it is considered a  “Mitzvah” (a good deed), and since the late 19th century even a rabbinical rule,  to teach the daughters and give them extremely good education, equal to the  education given to sons. So let’s remove the thought about the KKK from our  minds and go on trying to understand and respect one another. It’s our only  hope. All the  best,

Dear Mr. Editor: Be patient with me, I am going to explode! I am a graduate from LSU in Louisiana. I emigrated to an Arab country. And currently working as an electrical engineer. Surfing the net for jewish news agencies and reference source, I came across your website and the magazines you print. You have a rich and systematic product. Biased but informative. Controversial but amusing. Having said that, my letter to you comes from an angry man who is chagrined by articles diffusing erroneous information on Arabs and Muslims. I am referring to Ms. Arlene Peck who is one of your columnists. She is extremely aggressive. She soaks in hatred. She is malicious. Every word she writes bites like a snake. Who is she anyway? A reporter who sunbathes in Cannes and Nice. She parades with celebrities and makes a living out of gossiping and telling third rate jokes. Yet, she is one of your most prolific writers. Why is she so angry at us? What did we do to her to unleash her hysterical anger against Arabs and Muslims? Why is she mocking our women? Look at the difference between Ms. Arlene Peck and Ms. Paulette Attie. Peck is bitter and angry miserable person. Attie is considerate and her articles are uplifting. Peck diffuses anger. Attie write positive articles about people (Jews and Non-Jews) from all walks of life. What a difference between these two women. I read Ms. Peck's articles and feel the need of taking a hot shower for hour. I read the articles of Ms. Attie and I rejoice. It is none of my business. However, positive writings is better than badmouthing people. Your publications are magnificent. But, a mature and responsible evaluation of Ms. Peck's column is necessary. Dear Editor: This is a response to the heated debate and antagonistic situation between Jews and Arabs, allegedly created by an article written by Arlene Peck and published by your agency. First of all, let me bring to your attention that I am neither a Jew or an Arab. The whole story is interesting to me. Arlene Peck's articles are notorious. They appeared on several Zionist websites. This woman came to light and to fame as a columnist when the World Jewish News Agency began to publish her articles. I watched her show on cable, when I lived in California. Funny, on TV, she is controlled and reasonable. When she writes, she goes ape. Her article on your website is disturbing. I mean her article about how Arab men treat Arab women. She could be right. But why is she adding pain to injuries?  Is she a student of sociology? A reformer? No. Tone her down. She is out of control. I went back to previous editions of magazines you publish, one of them is Epsilon. Again, Arlene Peck hammered Arab culture and insulted Islam. She could be funny and interesting. However her one-side view of the whole situation does not serve any purpose, except creating an ambiance of hate. Elena Rubin reacted very properly. She was right when she said that early Jews did not respect Jewish women. Everybody knows that. Jewish women did not play any significant role in Jewish society. In that sense, Jewish and Arab women are alike. It is very possible that Arab men hit and kill their women for adultery. It is very possible too, Jews stone alive Jewish women who committed adultery. The bible gives us plenty evidence on this matter. Now about Dr. Rosenfeld. I could not tell whether Dr. Rosenfeld is a man or a woman. Nevertheless, what ever the Dr. wrote was correct, welcoming and friendly. Arlene Peck should follow suit. Mr. Habach's letter was less friendly. The man is obviously outraged, being an Arab man. I do not blame him. Angry people lose control of civility when their honor is tarnished by irresponsible members of the media. Your site is not a KKK site. It is a beautiful and constructive site. You are not biased, even though you favor a Jewish side. It is true, however, your agency gives the opportunity to Arabs and Jews to present their own point of views. Dear editor: Please let your readers know this. You have a large circulation so let the whole world knows about Dick Cheney's irresponsible actions. Here it is. Scott Tooley, a Republican, and former Congressional aide and law school graduate, educated at renowned Christian universities, has filed suit against the President, Vice President and relevant federal agencies for their illegal surveillance programs.  According to the complaint, the Bush-Cheney Administration initiated numerous illegal and perpetual surveillance methods on Mr. Tooley and his family after he was incorrectly placed on the TSA’s “selectee” or watch list. Mr. Tooley’s case is unique because the suit alleges that Bush Administration has used additional illegal surveillance methods on him in addition to the illegal wiretapping.  Mr. Tooley is also the first Republican to file suit with regard to the Bush Administration’s illegal surveillance programs. In the many months prior to filing suit, when Mr. Tooley asked federal agencies for the removal of his name from the TSA’s watch list and any documents relating to the matter, he was stonewalled and told that the agencies could neither confirm nor deny that his name was placed on multiple watch lists.

The complaint was filed today in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia on Friday, February 17, 2006.  Mr. Tooley is represented by Larry Klayman, former Chairman of Judicial Watch and former U.S. Senate candidate from Florida.  Mr. Klayman is now in private practice in Miami and Washington, D.C.

SAVE DARFUR: RALLY TO STOP GENOCIDE, WASHINGTON, D.C., APRIL 30, 2006

The leaders of the world must be held accountable for preventing and stopping genocide in Darfur now and preventing and stopping genocide once and for all anywhere in the future," says American Jewish World Service president. After nearly three years of genocidal  violence in Darfur, Sudan, American Jewish World Service (AJWS) is co-sponsoring a demonstration in Washington D.C. called, "Save Darfur: Rally to Stop Genocide." The rally will take place on Sunday, April 30 at the John Marshall Park, located near the United States Capitol at Pennsylvania Avenue and 4th Street N.W. The purpose of the rally is to demand immediate deployment of an international peacekeeping force in Darfur. The multinational force would supplement the African Union (AU) troops now in the region and include United States support. Demonstration organizers and participants will also insist that this expanded UN peacekeeping force be given a mandate to protect civilians and stop the genocide, a mandate the AU does not now have.  "As Jews we understand the consequences of silence and indifference from the international community in the face of genocide," said AJWS President Ruth Messinger. "We must stop deliberate attempts to annihilate any people and ensure that 'never again' honors the memory of all the Jews who perished, and all those who continue to be killed based on race, religion or ethnicity," she stated. Two years ago, AJWS launched a humanitarian aid and advocacy campaign within the Jewish community to stop the genocide in Darfur, Sudan. AJWS also helped found the interfaith Save Darfur Coalition, the major sponsor of the rally. The Coalition is mobilizing all Americans to act and hopes to attract thousands of people to the rally. AJWS is partnering with the Jewish Council for Public Affairs to stimulate a significant turnout from the American Jewish community. Simultaneous events are being encouraged throughout the country. A vigil is already planned for the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. The Save Darfur Coalition is also leading the Million Voices for Darfur postcard campaign. Its goal is to obtain one million postcards or signatures asking President Bush to demand a multinational peacekeeping force at the United
Nations Security Council. AJWS expects to collect tens of thousands of the million signatures. The one million signatures will be delivered en masse to President Bush at the rally.

Currently, there are 7,000 African Union troops in Darfur, an area the size of Texas. They are charged only with monitoring ceasefire agreements, which are continually broken, and escorting aid convoys. In December, the United States Congress reneged on its promise to provide $50 million to support the troops on the ground. The AU only has enough funds to operate through March unless immediate action is taken by the United States and other countries. In September 2004, President Bush labeled the crisis in Darfur genocide, but activists say the administration has done little to stop it. This month, the United States assumed the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council. In response to increased public pressure from thousands of
Americans, the U.S. negotiated a statement authorizing the initiation of a contingency plan for possible deployment of an international peacekeeping force in Darfur. But the statement is not a resolution and "lacks teeth" according to Messinger. "There is no resolve, no commitment from any country to send troops, no timetable, no mandate for civilian protection, and only a vague estimate that this plan will take one year to develop," she said.  "Meanwhile, murder, rape and forced starvation continue unabated. A Musical Memory: Ben Olander comes to the US to educate with song as Tribute of Raoul Wallenberg. Ben Olander, one of Sweden’s most persuasive balladeers, will come to New York City February 28^th through March 6^th to educated students of the utmost bravery of Raoul Wallenberg.  Ben, in association with the International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation, already has several schools awaiting his forty-five minute lecture, followed by two songs inspired by the heroism of Raoul Wallenberg.  His goal is to reach as many students as possible and make them aware of Wallenberg’s influence during the Second World War.  He will be attending schools in Queens and Brooklyn, as well as the United Nations International School in Manhattan.   Ben Olander developed an intense appreciation for Raoul Wallenberg when he was about seven years of age.  His grandparents, who were resistance fighters during the war, aided in the protection of Jewish refugees by housing them in their “transition camp.”  In 1947, Ben met a Hungarian woman, who had escaped to his grandparents’ house from the tyranny of her homeland.  She had shared with him the most intimate details of the kindness of Raoul Wallenberg.  Confused, Ben asked his father why people were so eager to discriminate against a man who had selflessly saved tens of thousands of people from concentration camps.  Ben’s father, in agreement with his young son, revealed his anger towards the same people who had so urgently tried to make Wallenberg disappear.  Ben Olander realized his newly developed passion that he eventually made a part of his life.  His message is inspired through song and storytelling. Raoul Wallenberg was a Swedish diplomat during the Second World War.  He, along with the War Refugee Board, planned an operation for Wallenberg to go into Hungary and help as many people as he could.  On January 17^th, 1945, nearing the liberation of the concentration camps, Wallenberg was arrested by the Soviet government and never to be heard from again.  He saved approximately 100,000 lives through his efforts. "CAN THIS BE HAPPENING?"

Once again, I feel compelled to interrupt my series on shidduchim. Global events - specifically that which is unfolding in Israel and the world at large, cry out and demand a response. As a survivor of the Holocaust, I am not shocked by the brutality and evil of the Hitlers of today. But what is amazing is that, despite the fact that the entire world has been set ablaze by these Islamist madmen, the nations of the world, and many of our own Jews, still don't get it. But then again, they didn't get it in pre-Holocaust Europe either. Hitler never hid his evil intent. He openly spewed forth hatred and vitriol. He openly schemed to conquer the world and annihilate all Jews, and yet, no one took him seriously, including our own people. Alas, today, we see history repeating itself. In the '30`s, Chamberlain succumbed to Hitler, and now it seems that the entire world is succumbing to these barbarians, who are prepared to set the world afire to achieve their goals; barbarians who, even in London, have the audacity to hold up signs reading, "Europe, you will pay - your 9/11 is on the way. Be prepared for the real Holocaust". And amazingly, they get away with it. They know how to play to the mind set of Western liberals: "We've been abused and exploited. You denied our freedom of speech and our civil rights!" And to throw westerners off guard, they wave the olive branch in English and the bloody dagger in Arabic, thus liberal leftists fall into their trap. This is a tried and true formula which these twenty-first century terrorists inherited from their mentors, Hitler and Arafat.

Officially, this latest international blood bath was incited by "cartoons". I cannot help but be struck by the irony of it all. We, the Jewish people, have been, and continue to be demonized by the most obscene, hateful cartoons, and there has never been so much as a murmur of protest from anyone. But even as I write these lines, it occurs to me how absurd my words must sound. After all, the entire world was silent while we were driven into the gas chambers and incinerated in the crematoria - so why on earth would anyone care about cartoons that defame us? You might wonder about yet another irony what connection is there between a cartoon of Mohammed published in a Danish paper and the Jews?

I ask you, what relevance does a cartoon of Mohammed have to the Holocaust? And how does publishing an obscene cartoon of Hitler with Anne Frank respond to the cartoons that appeared in Denmark? The answer in simple. These satanically driven Islamists are so consumed by hatred of our people that, to them, everything begins and ends with the Jews! Their acts of terror have gone beyond 9/11. The demagogue of Iran unabashedly proclaims that the Holocaust never took place and that Israel must be wiped off the map. You might protest that that's just the talk of a madman. I agree, except that he has a bomb to give teeth to his words and millions of fellow madmen who share his obsession. Gone are the days of Menachem Begin who dispatched the Israel Air Force to destroy Iraq's nuclear capability. Today, the leftists dominate Israel; today, it is the Israeli government that expels Jewish settlers from their homes, from the land of their fathers. Today, Arabs can incite to riot, attack, and kill, and the Israeli government turns the other cheek - and it's all done in the name of the "Peace Process" - in the vain hope that by giving up our land and shutting our eyes to their acts of ignom, we will appease their ferocious appetite.  While we have undergone many crises in the past, and the Israeli government was far from perfect, there is one thing that the courageous Israeli leadership always knew - and that was that terrorist bullies could not be indulged, but had to be dealt with a strong arm and an uncompromising hand. But that simple wisdom evaporated with Oslo, and since then, everything has gone down hill.

And if you, dear readers, are not convinced of the dangers posed by the Islamists, may I suggest that you check the web site of www.pmw.il.org and see for yourself what they are all about. Having said all this, however, nothing frightens me as much as that which took place in Amona, where Jew attacked Jew. Moses' words ring out loud and clear, and speak to us anew: "Rasha, Lama sakeh rayecha?" - "Evil one, why do you raise your hand against your brother? - for to raise your hand against your own people is evil". Yes, it is that which frightens me. Was it for this that we returned to our land after almost 2,000 years, so that Jewish police might bash in the heads of their own sons; so that they might break the bones of their own men, so that they might beat and abuse their own women and charge into a crowd astride horses, swinging their clubs. Is it for this that we have come back? Is this the Zionist dream? Had this brutality been perpetrated against Arabs, you can bet your bottom dollar that there would have been a national - nay, international outcry. A special commission would have been appointed to investigate, and heads would be rolling. Should you argue however, that the settlers broke the law and the government had no choice but to uproot and disperse them - then I will tell you that there are many ways in which this could have been done without resorting to such savage physical violence. And again - had these settlers been Arabs, those precautions would have been taken.

These religious pioneers, the settlers, have, time and again proven their love and devotion for the land and the Jewish people, but in past years, they have been demonized by the leftist media and have been held responsible for the ongoing hostilities in the country. Even as in the days prior to the Holocaust. - Assimilated Jews blamed their religious counterparts for anti-Semitis, so, today, leftists hold the religious settlers responsible for the ongoing violence.  Admittedly, there are some lonely voices in Israel's secular community who have courageously spoken out on behalf of the settlers - voices of people like Yoram Gaon, the popular Israeli recording artist and actor. I share with you a few excerpts from remarks that he made on his radio show. "Looking at these "law-breakers" (the settlers), its impossible not to think about the big city (Tel Aviv), the city that never stops. Hand on heart: how many of us would leave our warm houses, our dreams of getting rich, our cafes and night clubs, to be with the Land of Israel, that it should not remain alone?

How many of us, of our own free will, would spend time on a barren, wind swept hill in a caravan? "Nothing is worth these terrible pictures in which we saw such great force expended .... Horses charging forwards - yes, I know, in reaction to stones and clubs being wielded. But suddenly, the face of our police and army has changed, and they are getting further away from us as if in a bad dream. They are suddenly different, estranged from this beautiful and good land. "OK, fine, so there were polls and 60% are not interested in Amona and blame the settlers. These 60% are not interested in anything. "True, this is a critical moment in the process of determining our borders according to the demographic majority.

This is a dangerous concept and food for thought. If the borders of the land of Israel are to be drawn according to Jewish-Arab demographics, then in another fifty years or less, our borders will be reduced to the beachfront of Tel Aviv. That is why borders according to demographics are not such a good idea. We have to think of something more creative, something that will leave us here for a few more good years, even after we no longer have a demographic majority. "It would be a good idea to think long and hard about this. When the regime fights the people of Amona, who is it really fighting? Are these youths the State of Israel's real enemy?

"And oh, something else I wanted to say. It's a good thing that Hamas is no longer around, and all the charters calling for our destruction have been revoked, and Iran has voluntarily shut down its atomic reactor. Now we can finally turn to our real problems...."

Painful words from Yoram Gaon. But having said all this, what is the solution? How do we understand that which is happening?" There is no question, but that we are living in Eekvey D'Moshiach - the advent of Messiah, a period, we are told, when all the "isms" will collapse, and people will come to the realization that it there is only One upon whom we can rely, and that is the One and only One, the Almighy G-d. After the evacuation from Gush Katif, our religious pioneering brethren who hitherto had aligned themselves with the secular government rather than the Torah community learned this bitter lesson. They discovered that for those whose love of the land is not rooted in the Torah, it is easy to give it up and abandon it. We are a nation by virtue of our Torah. Our reality is different from the reality of other nations. To be sure, the odds have always been against us. We have always been a minuscule minority - How else can it be if we are to be "witnesses of G-d? As for Iran, there is an amazing Yalkut Shimoni that states that in the days prior to the coming of Messiah, the King of Iran will threaten the entire world and all the nations will tremble. But HaShem reassures our people, telling us not to fear. It is all happening so that we may behold our redemption.  The words of the President of Iran have given this prophecy new reality. So instead of succumbing to fear, let us rally around our Torah and unite as one in love of Israel.
