European Commissioner for External Relations: "Middle East Peace Process"

Thank you very much Mr President.

Honourable Members,

It is an honour to address you today on the Middle East Peace Process. It is particularly timely since I have just returned from a visit to Gaza, the West Bank and Israel earlier this week. TALK ABOUT DOUBLE STANDARD

By Micah Halpern

The Double Standard Myth is circulating, once again, in the Middle East. According to the Myth, Western countries show preferential treatment to Israel over Arab countries of the Middle East. According to the Myth, it is unfair for Western democracies to put pressure on Arab countries and not exert the same pressure on Israel. According to the current incarnation of the Double Standard Myth...Read full article

Steeling themselves

The Steelers/Seahawks Game. I was invited to a SuperB party downtown, and went late, as I had other obligations. And beginnings are always more uneventful than the closing hours, if you’re honest about it. As I traversed  the empty streets, vacuumed of all but clueless tourists (sorry, but it’s true) in Times Square, I realized how sacramental--yes, holy--are the lineaments of The Game. Any major Game. Baseball World Series! Super Bowl!  Launching the policy debate in Israel. With less than two month left before Israelis cast their ballots in the national elections it remains painfully unclear if what may be the most critical vote since the founding of the Jewish State will take place without any serious policy debate. As both acting PM Olmert and DM Mofaz made clear in recent presentations, if Kadima forms the next government they intend to carry out major unilateral retreats in the West Bank after establishing that the Palestinians continue to fail to fulfill their Roadmap obligations to break up the terror infrastructure. These retreats are to ostensibly unilaterally "set" Israel's permanent  borders. But as U.S. Secretary of State Rice made clear this week in her press conference with FM Livni, while Israel can retreat as much as it wants, it is America's position that Israel's permanent borders can only be set via negotiations with the Palestinians. As was the case before the retreat from Gaza, Olmert again makes no bones  that he is clueless as to who or what will fill the void - and doesn't care...Read full article.

American Embassy “Attacked” in Indonesia for Cartoons. Why?
A brief explanation of “The Traditions of the Prophet” and the “Shari’a.” The plaguing question that we must discuss is ‘why?’  Why do Muslims react with violence when Mohammed is satirized? Many people are studiously ignoring this question. To understand the waves of protests and violence occurring across the world one must understand Islamic theology and history, and then view the current "cartoon crisis” through that grid. ..Read full article

BREAKING NEWS:

Muslim Response to Danish Cartoons was Predictable

Mohammed Himself Authorized the Assassinations of Those Who Satirized Him

By Randall Terry, President, Society for Truth and Justice

Muslims who attack or threaten death to those who mock Mohammed are following in the footsteps of Mohammed himself. According to Islamic law, satirizing Mohammed has been a capital offense.  Here are historic examples: It is a capital offense under Islamic law (punishable by up to death) to satirize or mock Mohammed. Islamic law (the Shari ’a) is the political aggregate of the Quran, the sayings of Mohammed (the hadith), and the deeds of Mohamed (the Sunna - not to be confused with Sunni Muslims). In Mohammed's lifetime, he ordered the assassination or the execution of individuals who satirized him. His actions are the foundation for why it is a criminal offense to satirize, speak ill of, or in any way publicly deny the authenticity of Mohammed's mantle, mission, and message. We can expect the following: Muslims worldwide will demand that no cartoons or satirizing of Mohammed be allowed in any nation that enjoys freedom of speech and press. Some newspapers will bow to these demands, others who cherish the freedom of speech and the press will resist such political and cultural incarceration. We can expect and Islamic religious leader to issue a fatwa (judgment and condemnation) against the author (s) of such cartoons, calling for their death for the crime of blasphemy.

Threats of death or assassination attempts will be levied against those who authored the cartoons.  Threats, assassination attempts, or destruction of property for the newspapers who ran the cartoons will begin to happen. Here are two historic examples of Mohammed orchestrating the assassination of someone who satirized him: (Please Note: the following accounts are recorded by one of the most respected Islamic historians in the world, Ibn Ishaq; his work dates from the 700s A.D. THESE ARE NOT THE WORDS OF A DETRACTOR, BUT RATHER OF A DEVOUT MUSLIM.) Example 1) Ibn Ishaq recounts the killing of "the enemy of God" named Ka'b son of al-Ashraf. After Badr, Ka'b "began to inveigh against the apostle…" He wrote satirical verses of poetry that were insulting to Mohammed and Islamic women. Mohammed said, "Who will rid me of the son of Ashraf?" Muhammad son of Maslama said, 'I will deal with them for you, O apostle of God, I will kill him.' He said, 'Do so if you can.'" Mohammed then gave the assassin permission to lie and deceive the target of his wrath. Amazingly, the killer recruited the victim's foster brother, who had become a Muslim. Together, with the foster brother having the victim's confidence, they led him on a midnight stroll pretending to visit and conduct business with him. On signal, they lunged on him. The assassin reported: "I thrust [my dagger] into the lower part of his body, then I bore down upon it until I reached his genitals, and the enemy of God fell to the ground... Our attack upon God's enemy cast terror among the Jews, and there was no Jew in Medina who did not fear for his life" (See page 365 -- 368, Ibn Ishaq). Example 2) Tragically, we see that women are not exempt from this type treatment. When Abu 'Afak was assassinated for publicly speaking against Mohammed's killing of another man, Asma daughter of Marwan wrote verses of poetry against Mohammed for Abu 'Afak's murder. Ishaq records: "When the apostle heard what she had said he said, 'who will rid me of Marwan's daughter?' Umayr... who was with him heard him, and that very night he went to her house and killed her. In the morning he came to the apostle and told him what he had done and he (Mohammed) said, 'You have helped God and his apostle, O Umayr!' When he asked if he would have to bear any evil consequences the apostle said, ' Two goats won't but their heads about her...'" (Ibn Ishaq, 675-676). Source: The Life of Mohammed; Ibn Ishaq. Translated by A. Guillaume. Oxford University press, Pakistan, 1967.

If we are going to understand the Islamic mind, we must study the life of Mohammed. ‘What would Mohammed do?’ needs to be the grid through which we view Islamic culture, law, and acts of terrorism. If you want to understand the Middle East: study Mohammed. Muslims who attack or threaten death to those who mock Mohammed are following in the footsteps of Mohammed himself. The best thing that newspapers in America and around the world can do is to run the cartoon of Mohammed over and over and over; in this we will simultaneously show the true nature of freedom, and the true nature of Islam.”

Giving terrorists day jobs as cops to fulfill Roadmap?

By Dr. Aaron Lerner

If the Palestinian Authority (PA) gives all the armed terrorists day jobs as cops would that constitute "breaking up the terror infrastructure"? The PA leadership thinks so. And Israel's Foreign Minister Livni, perhaps out of a desire to keep Israel's options open, declines to take a position. This is a terrible mistake by all counts. The Oslo experience has shown time and again that giving terrorists a badge and a salary doesn't prevent them from moonlighting as terrorists. If anything, the police training only makes them more dangerous, as demonstrated by the CIA trained policemen/terrorist sharpshooters. Some have tried to draw a parallel between the recruitment of members of the various Jewish underground groups into the IDF at the founding of the State of Israel, but the comparison fails on all counts:

The members of the Jewish underground groups were drafted into the IDF to help protect the fledgling State from annihilation - not take them off the streets. The Palestinians have the great luxury of not needing to waste their resources on an army to battle their enemies: they did, after all, commit to resolve their disputes with Israel via peaceful means, and they can rely on Israel to defend their areas from foreign invasion.

The PA doesn't need a huge army.  It needs an efficient, professional, police force.  It doesn't need tens of thousands of assault rifle bearing forces.  A few disciplined SWAT teams would suffice. Want to give the terrorists jobs to they get off the streets? Fine. But not as cops.

the color greenWill Olmert's move against settlers quash the retreat debate?

By Dr. Aaron Lerner

Whether they planned it all along or simply stumbled into it, the Olmert teams' decision to try and carry out a series of high profile assaults against settlers over the course of the period leading to election day is sheer genius. Olmert's team didn't have to poll much to find that many of Kadima's potential supporters from the Left and Left-Center would like nothing more than to see settlers "put in their place" with the television screens filled with images of Jews being dragged from their homes in various outposts and elsewhere in the West Bank. It's a win-win situation for Olmert: if a massive show of force causes the settlers to leave passively it's a victory - and if security forces have to break bones - or worse - to show whose boss - that's also a vote getter.

Olmert's team, with the cooperation of the media, can market these "victories" over the settlers as proof of his ability to handle Israel's security challenges despite his lack of prior experience. To their credit, the advisors behind the Kadima Party have already anticipated the negative impact that pre-election terror attacks could have on Olmert's image.  With the help of COS Halutz and others, the bloody second Intifada period has been set as the benchmark for terror, so even if literally hundreds are murdered in terror attacks before election day it can be claimed that terror is down. But should the ability to uproot settlers from their homes be the defining qualification for candidates in the upcoming elections?

It might be if uprooting some settlers was the only thing holding up the implementation of a popular final status agreement that had already passed the confirmation process - or if retreat was a foregone conclusion. But no one seriously claims an agreement is even close to being reached - and that's with or without Israel standing its ground on requiring the PA to actually disarm the terrorists before the talks start.  That's disarm - not simply put on the PA security forces payroll. As for retreat: it isn't a foregone conclusion - it's the true issue of the elections.

Max 2 Ref - Annuaire de référencement de site webTime and again polls demonstrate that the Israeli public opposes retreat. The public has no problem appreciating just how reckless further retreats in the West Bank would be.  In point of fact, most of those who supported Ariel Sharon preferred him despite - rather than because - of his plans to carry out additional retreats after the elections. That's why the Olmert team intends to upstage the retreat debate with media coverage of security operations against settlers.  They know that if the elections turn into a debate over policy, support could plummet. For the sake of Israel one can only hope that Netanyahu and the rest of the national camp are up to the formidable task of convincing the citizenry to vote for policy rather than personality.

Suicide bomber blows himself in Tel Aviv wounding 20 people

TEL AVIV, Israel -- A Palestinian suicide bomber blew himself up at a Tel Aviv fast-food stand Thursday, wounding 20 people in an apparent attempt to destabilize the region just a week before the Palestinian parliamentary elections. The militant Islamic Jihad group claimed responsibility in a telephone call to The Associated Press. The group has been responsible for all six suicide bombings in Israel in the past year, and is the only faction boycotting the Jan. 25 vote. The bomber, who witnesses said pretended to be a peddler selling disposable razors, walked into The Mayor's Shwarma in a crowded pedestrian mall near the old central bus station...Read full article

Post Sharon Era Elections - Program Over Personality

By Dr. Aaron Lerner

Make no mistake about it:  the overwhelming majority of Israelis oppose unilateral withdrawals (less than twenty percent supported more "unilateral disengagements" in a poll conducted last month by Mina Tzemah for the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs's Defensible Borders Project). But in a personality rather than policy-driven decision, many of the very same people who tell pollsters that they oppose the post-election retreats Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has in mind also say they would vote for a Sharon-led Kadima Party. And there was an underlying logic to this choice.

After all, Israel's survival isn't just based on good policy - it can also depend on critical crisis management. It is 4:00 AM and Syria has suddenly advanced a battalion towards the border.  Who do you want to be woken up to handle the crisis?  Ariel Sharon, Binyamin Netanyahu or Amir Peretz? There were a lot of Israelis who thought Sharon's policies were madness but still would prefer Sharon at a fateful 4:00 AM over the others. But with Sharon effectively off the Kadima list there simply isn't anyone  there who enjoys this very special public confidence. Kadima can be expected to appeal to voters to honor "Sharon's legacy" on election day, but it's not a particularly powerful appeal.  Especially when the "legacy" is a policy the public opposes.

Jewish museum in Austria exhibits anti-Semitic objects to provoke debate

Photo: Anti-Semitic salt and pepper shakers are displayed, Oct. 20, 2005, as part of an exhibit on anti-Semitic items at the Jewish Museum in Hohenems, western Austria.

HOHENEMS, Austria- The exhibit in the basement of the Jewish museum has the feel of a cozy antique shop or an old-fashioned apartment. But a closer look at the paintings, paperweights, pipes and other knickknacks reveals something chilling: They are all anti-Semitic, featuring large, crooked noses and other unflattering caricatures of Jews. Curator Hanno Loewy went for the comfortable, homey look with a purpose - to unsettle visitors and get them thinking. "These objects were part of a certain coziness. They were meant to be cozy," he said. "It takes three to five minutes, and then people realize it's not cozy at all. The disturbance they feel when they realize that themselves is much more effective than if we were to put up a sign saying, 'This is dangerous.' " On display are 580 objects from the collection of Gideon Finkelstein, a Jew who bought anti-Semitic items over 15 years. Though the objects dating from 1880 to 1920 are nothing more than "kitschy knickknacks," they were a way for their original owners to exert power over Jews, whom they perceived as threatening, Loewy said. "They are in a way transforming a fantasy of something dangerous into something you could control," he said. Among the most eye-catching displays is a fairground shooting stand depicting a Jew and a ferocious dog. By hitting the target, shooters set off a mechanism that sets the dog on the Jew, who uses an umbrella in an attempt to fend off the attack. In a separate room, visitors can listen to an interview in which Finkelstein says he considers it important to save these items because they show just how widespread anti-Semitism was long before Nazi leader Adolf Hitler rose to power. "In the 80 years before Hitler, people in Germany, in Austria, in France, lived with anti-Semitism in their everyday lives," Finkelstein says in the presentation. "When someone like Hitler came and brought anti-Semitism to a climax, everything was already prepared. And I think it's important to show that."

The exhibit, which runs through Feb. 26, is the first public display of the Finkelstein collection. In his interview for museum visitors, Finkelstein says modern anti-Semitism is expressed in other forms. "Today, there are books, there is the Internet, there are many other ways to disseminate propaganda like this," he warns. Such means are explored in another exhibit room, dubbed the Rumour Kitchen. Visitors open cupboards and drawers to find mini-exhibits illustrating modern anti-Semitism. One cupboard is devoted to Mel Gibson's film The Passion of the Christ, which some Jewish organizations objected to for fear it would cause bad blood between Christians and Jews. Another drawer, labelled "Remove the cover! What teachers don't like to hear," contains a copy of a note with anti-Semitic jokes recently passed around among girls in a nearby school. Scribbled in childish handwriting are statements such as: "When something doesn't suit us Nazis, a Jew will be gassed!" followed by a smiley face. A Jewish heritage museum might be expected to avoid this subject in fear of conveying a message that promotes rather than criticizes anti-Semitism. But to Loewy, anti-Semitism is a topic "Jewish museums can't avoid if you don't merely present a Judaica silver collection, and I don't want to do that." "It doesn't help to stick the head into the sand and pretend that this is not around," he said. In 1860, Hohenems, a town of 14,000 people near Austria's western border with Switzerland, had a vibrant Jewish community of 560.

Today, only Loewy and a handful of other Jews live here. The town has an unusual relationship to its Jewish roots because its Jewish community had largely dissolved before the Second World War. That means the Holocaust is not "the overshadowing one aspect of history that dominates everything else," said Loewy, who moved to the town from Germany in 2004. "Hohenems has a more positive connotation to the descendants than other German or Austrian or Polish places do," he said. "This is a factor that makes it easier to make interesting projects here." American descendants of Hohenems' Jews have formed a 150-member group that supports the museum. Uri Taenzer of Moorestown, N.J., secretary-treasurer of the American Friends of the Jewish Museum Hohenems, praised the exhibit, saying it combats anti-Semitism by "exposing and demonstrating some of this stupidity that gave rise to anti-Semitism." "If the exhibit reminds people of how ignorant anti-Semitism can be, then it helps," he said in a telephone interview. -By S. lauf.

Norwegian Official Supports Boycotting Israeli Products

OSLO, (WAFA-PLO news agency)- Norwegian official called Thursday for boycotting the Israeli products, Norwegian media sources said. The NRK (Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation), said Thursday that the Finance Minister, Kristin Halvorsen, urged Norwegian consumers to boycott Israeli products. The Norway Post paper said that Halvorsen's Socialist Left Party will begin a solidarity campaign for Palestinians at the end of the month. Halvorsen says a boycott will visualize the displeasure with Israel's policy towards the Palestinians. "My goal and that of the Socialist Left Party is that Norwegian consumers  will avoid goods and services from Israel and make other choices in the  stores," Halvorsen was quoted as saying.

Sharon aide promotes Munich film

Director Steven Spielberg has hired one of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's key aides to market his film Munich in the country. The film, about the killing of 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympic Games, opens in Israel next month. Eyal Arad, who helped plan the recent Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, has arranged a Tel Aviv screening for the widows of the murdered sportsmen. "We are talking about a film that has generated a lot of interest," he said. "Naturally that sort of interest can entail some negative reactions as well as positive reactions," he added, calling Israel an "important market" for the film. The film has caused controversy among former members of Israel's intelligence community, with Avi Dichter, a retired head of the Shin Bet intelligence service, likening the film to a children's adventure story. "There is no comparison between what you see in the movie and how it works in reality," he said.

Historical accuracy: The film is based on the 1984 book Vengeance, which is said to be based on the confessions of an officer from the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad who broke ranks in protest at its "aggressive tactics". It portrays a team of hitmen torn by questions of conscience and on the run from Palestinian gunmen. That version of events has been rejected by historians in Israel and elsewhere. But one of the widows who saw Spielberg's film said a lack of historical accuracy may have worked in Spielberg's favour. Ilana Romano - whose weightlifter husband was among those killed - said it overlooked the 1973 incident when Mossad agents targeting a Palestinian fugitive mistakenly killed a Moroccan waiter in Lillehammer, Norway. "Had Spielberg wanted to harm Israel's image, he would have included the Lillehammer affair," she said. "Don't let's over-analyse Spielberg's film."

Rocket barrage if Sharon dies'
1 terror leader threatening life of replacement prime minister

By Aaron Klein

Palestinian groups in the Gaza Strip are watching the news regarding Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's deteriorating health carefully and will celebrate with Qassam rocket firings at Jewish towns if Sharon dies, terror leaders told WorldNetDaily. One militant leader threatened the life of Sharon's temporary replacement, Deputy Minister Ehud Olmert, who was installed as prime minister just hours ago. "I am ready with my candies and my rockets and praying to Allah that Sharon dies. We have prepared a celebratory barrage of rockets ready to fire into Israel on the occasion of the death of our enemy," said Abu Abir, spokesman for the Popular Resistance Committees, an umbrella group of Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists responsible for firing hundreds of Qassam rockets  and mortars at Jewish towns...

Former Shin Bet Chief Avi Dichter squanders his integrity for shot at being a minister?

What did the jumper say as he hurdled past the 10th floor? "So far so good."

"The numbers speak for themselves. . . it is clear that disengagement has decreased terror" Former Shin Bet Chief Avi Dichter said yesterday as he praised Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's retreat at a press conference where he announced he was joining Sharon's Kadima Party. Dichter went on to say that there may be more retreats (aka "unilateral withdrawals") out of "security considerations." Shin Bet Chief Avi Dichter knew full well that one has to consider  considerably more than a few months of "numbers" in order to get an indication if the retreat policy is panning out...

Eric Yoffie’s Questionable Resolution

By Jerome S. Kaufman, World Jewish News Agency Columnist, National Secretary of the Zionism Organization of America

One can’t help but wonder how the more than 2000 voting delegates at the Union for Reform Judaism developed the military and political expertise to draft a resolution demanding a clear exit strategy from Iraq? How embarrassing for the Jews to have one of their largest organizations take such a stand against an administration attempting to defend us, despite dedicated politically-motivated malicious criticism from almost all the media and dissident groups as typified by flagrant anti-Semites like Cindy Sheehan and her scruffy band of malcontents camping outside President Bush’s home in Texas. WASHINGTON -- Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld conceded Monday that the insurgency in Iraq has been stronger than anticipated but also said the news media have focused on the war's growing body count rather than the progress that has been achieved. "To be responsible, one needs to stop defining success in Iraq as the absence of terrorist attacks," Rumsfeld said in remarks at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. He added, "It's appropriate to note not only how many Americans have been killed - and may God bless them and their families - but what they died for or, more accurately, what they lived for." Howard Stern's Fans Force Postponement/Cancellation of KABBALAH play in New York.

Photo: Poster of the the play "KABALLAH" by Tuvia Tenenbom of New York.

Following the Jewish Theater of New York's (JTNY) announcement about the extension of their play, KABBALAH, web-based fan clubs of Howard Stern speculated that his daughter was playing in this show--a fact that the JTNY successfully held in complete secrecy for over two months. The fans proceeded to make many vulgar comments, thus creating the possibility that throngs of them would come to take her pics in compromising poses--especially given that this show contains nudity.  At this stage the JTNY is  looking into the possibility of replacing her with another actress, but they do not know if such will be found in due time. "For the moment, though, we announce that performances scheduled for this week are canceled and that no tickets will be available for sale. As for future performances, we'll notify the public in the event that we are successful in finding replacement." told us, Isi Tenenbom, an official spokeswoman of JTNY. KABBALAH garnered some of the most intriguing reviews so far from local and international critics, and  many New Yorkers have been trying to get tickets, for this sold out play. "We have done our best to comply with theatergoers' wishes and have extended the show till the end of January. But, regretfully, at this moment we simply cannot have the show on the stage; we do hope that theatergoers will understand and appreciate.", added Tenenbom. The JTNY is one of the most exciting and unusual theater companies and venues in New York City, created and managed by Tuvia Tenenbom, a remarkable theater visionary,  who has been called "genius" by the World Jewish News Agency.

First U.S. casualties reported in offensive near Iraq-Syria border

BAGHDAD, Iraq- U.S. and Iraqi troops battled insurgents house-to-house on Monday, the third day of a major offensive against al-Qaida insurgents in a town near the Syrian border, and the U.S. command reported the first American death in the operation. The U.S. commander of the joint force, Col. Stephen Davis, said late Sunday that his troops had moved "about halfway" through Husaybah, a market town along the Euphrates River about 322 kilometres northwest of Baghdad. At least 36 insurgents have been killed since the assault began Saturday, and about 200 men have been detained, Davis said. He did not give a breakdown of nationalities of the detainees. Many were expected to be from a pro-insurgent Iraqi tribe. A U.S. marine was killed by small arms fire in Husaybah on Sunday, the military said.
