Making Matters Better (THE GOOD NEWS)

Paulette Attie

By Paulette Attie

We are constantly bombarded by news that, at best is discouraging, at worst, frightening.  We often sum up these exposures with words like,“ going from bad to worse,” “to add insult to injury,” “no good deed goes unpunished,” and “making matters worst.” When was the last time you heard someone say, “making matters better?”  You’ll start seeing that expression regularly, right here at The World Jewish News Agency. Paulette Attie (Award winning writer, singer, and actress), will write a column called “Making Matters Better.”  Should anyone wish to recommend an organization, person, writer, book, that makes a positive impact on people’s lives, send your suggestion to paulette@worldjewishnewsagency.com  If it’s an organization, include their mission and what they're doing to fulfill their goal.  If it’s a book, what is the book’s theme and why does it make a difference.

SHE HAS CLASS, STYLE, PRESENCE AND INTOXICATING INTELLIGENCE...

Hosting the book warming event was Gloria’s daughter, Lisa Bloom. Like mother, like daughter, with daughter Bloom wearing a stunning red jacket, long her mother’s trade mark. Bloom importantly followed in her mother’s footsteps by becoming a lawyer. She is now Court TV News Anchor, and ABC News Contributor. She introduced her mother with love and appreciation, and Allred showered similar appreciations back to her daughter, calling her “My best work.” Allred has the special gift of making whomever she talks to look smart. As brilliant as she is, she always compliments others for their insights and knowledge. There was a time when women who rose to the top of their profession were reluctant to include other women among their close associates. Not so with Allred. She was surrounded by powerful females at the Friars Club, including news anchor Diane Sawyer, Diane Dimond of Court TV, Dani Brettler from The Maury (Maury Povich) Show, Dr. Judy Kuriansky, book publisher Judith Regan, publicist Chase Bodine, detective April Brooks, who worked on a case Allred writes about in her book, and attorney Alexandra Leichter. The latter is the wife of Michael Moroko, one of the male partners in her law firm. Husband and wife flew in from L.A. to support Allred in her Fight Back and Win activities.

Chase Bodine said, “When you spend a few days with Gloria, there’s nothing you think you can’t do.”

Being with Allred throughout her New York book tour, publicist Chase Bodine said, “When you spend a few days with Gloria, there’s nothing you think you can’t do.” It’s because Allred fought the good fight that I became the first woman performer elected into the Friars Club. Once when having lunch with Milton Berle, I mentioned that fact. His reply was, “She’s also a performer, Paulette.” That she is. Given the right set up, Allred can deliver a more than respectable stand up comedy routine. We both have laugh out loud stories about entering the formerly men only steam room at the California Friars Club. For mine, a sign was posted on the entrance to the health club: “No male members allowed from 11 – 12 on Thursday. Friar Paulette Attie will be using the facilities.” I looked forward to a relaxing steam, confident no one else would be there. I heaved a sigh of pleasure as I sat down on the steam room bench. A male voice pierced through the steam and my solitude asking, “Would you like a towel?” You won’t find explicit details of this incident in my book The Seven Keys to Live a Masterful Life. Some of them appeared on the front page of the Los Angeles Times. Allred’s steam room story is in her book.

Maury Povich said, “I always learn something when I see you, Gloria.”

Gloria Allred is a Making Matters Better person. For over thirty years, she has been a crusader against injustices in all areas of our lives, handling cases of sexual abuse and prejudice, while defending our constitutional civil rights. She is equally skillful at letting us know about these violations of the law and of the human spirit. Will you become as smart as Allred if you read Fight Back and Win? Probably not, but you’ll pick up some very good tips. As Maury Povich said, “I always learn something when I see you, Gloria.”

FRANK D’AMORE wrote reviews and performed for the troops in Korea for 2 years. You wouldn’t know it from this picture, but Frank is one of the funniest people who ever was, is, or will be. Pictured: Bill Boggs, talk show host and showman extraordinaire, put together an SRO afternoon at the Friars Club celebrating Frank Sinatra’s 90th birthday. Bill did some outstanding TV interviews with Frank Sinatra. Thanks Bill for including me on your Sinatra birthday bash. Songwriter Ervin Drake had written me a set of female lyrics for one of Sinatra’s signature songs, “It Was a Very good Year.” I premiered it in my one woman off-Broadway show, About Time, and enjoyed singing it again at the Friars Club. Drake did the honors of singing the male lyrics, while splendidly accompanying himself on the piano.

The media called BOB HOPE "America's No. 1 Soldier in Greasepaint.” For the GIs, he was their clown hero.

In the works is a review she wrote called "Collaborators." It’s about composer Harold Arlen, and 4 of his brilliant lyricists: Ira Gershwin, “Yip” Harburg, Ted Koehler and Johnny Mercer. "Collaborators" will be directed by five time Emmy Award winner Francesca James. A star studded cast will join Paulette in singing the praises of these great songwriters. Paulette personally interviewed Arlen, Harburg and Mercer on her radio show, Paulette Attie’s Musical Playbill.   She’ll be singing at the Friars Club for a Frank Sinatra birthday tribute, produced by TV talk show host, Bill Boggs, who did some seminal interviews of Sinatra on TV. Paulette won the ASCAP Plus Songwriter Award, for the 6th year in a row. She is set to record her new song, “Star Quest,” for which she shares lyric credits with Bernard Lee. Then there are Paulette’s numerous concert appearances and playing the “better” half  to Chris Gampell’s “worst” half  in “Itch,” two person comedy by Elyse Nass PAULETTE ATTIE your fearless writer, has sung for members of the military at army and air force bases in the U.S., and a navy base in Japan.
