“We believe the harmony of art, together with the strength of the
human spirit, can overcome the contrariness and discord in today’s world.” This
statement, made by Larissa Zelkova, Director General of the Vladimir Potanin
Charity Fund, also reflects this author’s strongly held belief. The Guggenheim
Museum’s Russia! is an inspiring example of how harmony and accord is
alive and well, even when displaying art that can be 800 years old. It took the
cooperation of an international team of like-minded experts to make an exhibit
of this magnitude come to life. Russia! was also made possible by the

COMMENTARY BY DR. AARON LERNER
Olmert's
reality gap
By Dr. Aaron Lerner
The IDF responded with full force when the first Qassam rocket
landed in Israel after the retreat from the Gaza Strip, leveling
buildings used by the various Palestinian militias and killing
scores of armed militiamen targeted from the sky. Elite ground
forces also took part in surprise raids to drive home the message
that no place in the Gaza Strip was beyond the reach of the IDF. The
Palestinian assumption that Israel would honor "human shields" was
proven to be deadly wrong when a Qassam launching team was taken out
as they were setting up a rocket in a school yard. "The blood of the
children of Sderot is no less red" Israeli officials
explained.
No. This isn't what happened when the first Qassam fell. And it
isn't what happened when the 300th fell. And it isn't what happened
when rockets repeatedly landed by "strategic Israeli targets".
It didn't even happen after now Kadima politician Avi Dichter
confidently proclaimed recently that Israel would show its
stuff if the Palestinians dared to launch another Qassam. They
launched a score since then and the "stuff" has yet to be
seen. Of course there are all kinds of explanations for the yawning
gap between post retreat reality and the pre-retreat tough
talk but the gap is there for all to see.
It's a gap that Israelis who live near the Gaza Strip are reminded
of several times a day as the IDF shells and bombs empty
fields in response to an ever increasing number of Palestinian
rocket attacks. It's a gap that Mr. Olmert and the rest of the
retreat supporters continue to ignore, "Olmert said that once a
border is determined, Israel would "not lose any option for
security action in line with our needs in the fight against
terrorism, which is to a large degree the case today in Gaza." [The
Jerusalem Post 9 March] How did the philosopher get out of the
pit? He postulated a ladder and climbed out.
Ehud Olmert is trying to do the same thing.

Prominent Arab-American Professor Cheers Hamas,
Slams Bush. By DR. JOSEPH LERNER
In the interview which follows Rashid Khalidi,
Director of Columbia University's Middle East Institute and Edward Said
Professor of Arab Studies, welcomes Hamas' election victory as deserved and as
presenting an opportunity to calm the Palestinian-Israeli conflict by a
long-term truce. He asserts that Hamas brought terrorism to the conflict and
insists that this should not interfere with its potential to serve the long-term
truce. Khalidi attacks Bush for taking a "messianic" stand against terrorism...Read

Britain offered Friday to slash a 10.5 billion euros ($12.57

breakthrough to a fierce standoff over the bloc's future budget. French

exhibited with the Impressionists, but the involvement of Cézanne and Seurat in
the movement was slight compared to that of Gauguin. He contributed to five of
the eight Impressionist exhibitions—more than either Renoir or Sisley—and was
the most active artist-collector of Impressionist paintings after Caillebotte.
Gauguin and Impressionism demonstrates both that he was an Impressionist and
that he was a brilliant and highly original one...

that were apparently built and hewn prior to the Great Revolt by the Jews

rules are dumped. And insiders put the blame on American fashion
entrepreneurs, Italian designers who are doing business with
Americans, and Oh La La, (Can I say this?) on American gay
designers! It could be true, but I am not totally convinced.
The last 2 fashions at the London Fashion Week raised red flags...

Dogs suffer the fashion whims of their owners:
They're not an accessory yet people treat them and discard them as if
they were.
Recently three ladies on the bike path in Whistler stopped
their animated conversation when Callie, our golden retriever, approached
them for a pat and a sniff. The ladies happily obliged her, all parties
were pleased with the brief encounter, and various nice remarks were made
about golden retriever charm. But as they passed by, I heard one of the
women say, in reference to this breed, "Yes, but everybody and his brother
has one."

NEW YORK FASHION WEEK.
Skinny pants and clothes that are either shiny or slightly
shabby, were among the early trends for fall at New York Fashion Week. Metallic
fabrics replaced the beading that has been popular for several seasons, while
distressed leathers, especially in military-inspired garments, looked modern and...Read

Chocolate
may cut heart disease
The health claims of chocolate are not accepted by all.
Researchers have produced more evidence that dark chocolate
may help to reduce the risk of serious heart disease. They found eating a few
squares a day may stave off artery narrowing and hardening in smokers by

which are involved in blood clot formation. The research, by University
Hospital, Zurich, is published in Heart.
The researchers compared the effects of dark (74% cocoa solids) and
white chocolate on the smoothness of blood flow in the arteries of 20 male
smokers...Read

CONSIDERING PLASTIC SURGERY?
It is not widely known, but plastic surgery
seldom, if ever, uses any plastic. In fact, the name actually has no
connection at all with synthetic polymers (i.e., plastics). In this sense,
"plastic" derives from the Greek word plastikos meaning "to build up or take
form." Plastic surgery deals with the appearance, form and surgical
reconstruction of body tissues -- not the use of plastic substances to do so.
Plastic surgery is also much older than most people think...Read

 PATISSERIE
FOR PETS
Paris is well known as a canine form of paradise, with
the city's 200,000 dogs welcome in department stores and even allowed to eat
at the table in the best restaurants.
Now though one entrepreneur has ingeniously combined Parisians' two real
passions - for their pets and gourmet food - to produce the perfect Parisian
patisserie: a bakery devoted to dogs. It sells bacon biscuits in the shape
of a cat, or garlic and cheese flavour, and even bone-shaped cookies made of
real foie gras...Read
